Astronomy Classes to be Offered at VB Center for Art Education

Education OutreachLearn about some of the history and basics of Astronomy starting June 1, 2004.

Astronomy is the "Queen of Sciences", primarily because so many other disciplines of science are used to tell us about the distant objects in our solar system, or our Milky Way galaxy, or the rest of the universe.

I'll be teaching a "Basics of Astronomy" class at the Van Buren Center for Art Education on Tuesday evenings, June 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd.
Students will learn about some of the history behind modern astronomy, and where the remaining connections lie between astronomy and astrology. This is NOT an astrology class! We'll also learn how our understanding of the universe comes to us through the study of light, the supreme informant in astronomy. Spectroscopic studies of everything from planets to the most distant galaxies and "Quasars" is how we know what we know of the universe we're a part of.

This class will also deal with how students can get the most out of small telescopes, what you can and cannot see with small telescopes, and also how to use binoculars for astronomy. All students will be encouraged to bring any telescopes and binoculars to class with them every Tuesday night. The classes will run two hours each Tuesday night beginning at 7pm, and running till 9pm with a break between hours. We'll use students telescopes as well as my 12.5" f/7 Dobsonian every clear evening of class to view the sky from the Art Center. Students will also be invited up to Coleman Observatory for our public nights this summer.

Students may register with either the Center for Art Education located at 104 North 13th Street in Van Buren, or by way of Coleman Observatory, 5533 Wildwood Rd, Van Buren, AR 72956. You may send payment to either address, or you may pay the first night of class. Costs are $10 per person or $20 per family (2 or more). For more information you may call me at 474-4740 (number no longer in service) (no messages, please) or the Art Center at 474-7767, or email us at: bobmoody@aoas.org -or- ccartcenter@att.net.

Students under 16 years must attend with an adult.
