There's a Blue Moon tonight, for the Americas, at least. Blue moon's are the name given to the 2nd full moon in a calendar month, and with the moon being full again at 8:04pm CDT on May 31, 2007 (according to Astronomy magazine) that makes this the first Blue Moon in several years. With the requirement of having a Full Moon early in a 30-day-long or more usually a 31-day-long month, that helps to make this a relatively rare event, and hence the phrase, "once in a Blue Moon." The first Full Moon of May 2007 was at 5:09pm CDT on May 2, 2007.
BUT, get this. A member sent me an email earlier saying that JUNE was the Blue Moon month. I just found a reason why NEXT month is also a BLUE MOON month. "How can this be?" said I. It is due to the timing of the full moon. In Europe, tonight's Full Moon occurs at 1:04am local time, and that makes it the first Full Moon of June. A second Full Moon occurs on June 30, which does indeed, make June the Blue Moon month for Europe, while the Americas recognize it in May 2007. It's all in the timezone in which it occurs.
Cool, huh?
