Well, I finally took the plunge and am putting together a new computer.......

My old one gave out in October......It was a Pentium 4 setup I put together several years ago. First the Power Supply, then the CPU. Cry

Luckily, I have a Laptop to keep me going..............

I looked at off-the-shelf computers.......Very disapointing! Confused

The only retail choices we have in Fort Smith are Best Buy and Wal-mart. Very cheap components or overpriced obsolete technology. (Kind of like buying a good telescope at Wal-mart) Rolling Eyes

Finally, through a lot of research and a little help from our friendly indian casino in Roland...........I took the plunge and ordered the "Parts" to build a "Super Computer".........(I am keeping my fingers crossed, anyway)

Mostly, I'm getting everything "New-In-The-Box" from dealers on eBay, several hundred dollars cheaper than what I could buy the same assembled system for. Laughing Out Loud

Here is what I have coming:

700 watt Power Supply; From Best Buy

Asus P6T Deluxe Motherboard; This is one of the best motherboards that supports the new Intel core i7 CPU technology that came out last year..........

Intel i7-920 CPU; This is the low end of the i7 CPUs available, running four cores at 2.66 Ghz.

12 gb of DDR3 Memory; DDR3 memory is the most recent memory technology. I didn't get the fastest, just the most bang for the buck - 1333 ghz.

XFX Geforce GTX 260 Black Edition Video Card - Again not the best....But very close...........

Windows VIsta Ultimate 64 bit Operating System; I have heard a lot of good, bad, & ugly about Vista...............We will see............. (I still have XP Pro 32 bit, if I need it)

Seagate Barracuda 1tb Sata 2 Hard Drive; From Best Buy.

I am using my old tower case and DVD/CD Drives.

I should get everything in about a week..............Wish me Luck!!!! Laughing Out Loud

Leonard,
That sounds like a huge computer!
In terms of scopes I can compare your future system as a Takahashi vs. Tasco. (Tasco being my computer Wink )
1 TB Exclaimation My god! I have only 80 GB

Best luck with plugging wires!

With respect to Vista 64 I have heard that the problem is not the system BUT the companies not offering drivers for it.

Yup.......Most of the problems I've read about concerned finding 64 bit drivers for older equipment......Hopefully, using mostly new stuff, I won't have too much trouble.

I have a 80 gb hard drive in the old system....never filled it up..............

The only reason I got a 1tb HD was because it was only $99.00 at Best Buy, and a 360gb was $89.00. Talk about a bargain.

When I built my last one, 180gb was a BIG HD and cost $400.00.

Well I got all my parts and got it all together with no problems at all, which is a big surprise to me............ Rolling Eyes

I got Vista 64 installed and again, no problems.

A good test for any computer, I can run Flight Simulator X, SP2, with all setting at max and am maintaining 36 Frames Per Second..................

The proof is in the pudding, they say, so I will see how good the system is in the coming weeks.
