A DOOZY of a fireball flared up extremely bright behind me at about 1:25am, lighting up the ground here at the old observatory site like AT LEAST full moon light! I was able to catch the last portion of the flight and the somewhat wimpy terminal burst. The head was very bluish to lightly blue-green, and the tail started a short ways behind with sparks and red fire visible falling off. The terminal burst had little red to it, just a POOF of bright green light. AS it was so calm and quiet tonight, I waited in the yard for perhaps 8 - 10 minutes to see if I could hear any reports from it, but it remained quiet.
The trajectory was very flat, relatively slow actually, and began roughly under the "bowl" of Ursa Minor and ended in the burst slightly past the Mizar pair in the handle of Ursa Major. Another peculiarity to me was the breadth of the head and tail....MUCH wider than pretty much any other bright fireballs I've seen to date. QUITE IMPRESSIVE overall. Could have been almost overhead of Dave Grosvold's place in Cane Hill or possibly throughout the Fayetteville area up into southern Missouri.
Please post your sighting if you saw this one.
