Hey all -

Just thought I'd let you know that the strongest coronal mass ejection (aka solar flare) took place last night, erupting from sunspot 1158. Reports on Spaceweather.com indicate that the eruption should arrive this evening and run through Thursday evening. Chances are high that the auroras will be visible even in this area. Hope we see something!

I know this is old news now, but would a broadband filter help in such a situation, or are the light frequencies wrong for using such a filter?

Eric -

DANGER!! I know you know this, but it bears repeating:

DON'T TRY TO VIEW ANYTHING SOLAR WITHOUT A PROPER SOLAR FILTER!! I don't want someone reading this to think we are talking about viewing the coronal ejection itself without proper filtration.

On the other hand, if you are talking about viewing the aurora, then no filter would be necessary. However, it might be worth a try to see whether it improves things or not.

Ahh, yes. Sorry, I wasn't clear -I was talking about viewing the arora. If, however, I wanted to liquify my retinas in 13.6 milliseconds (and ignite my face like a mini hydrogen bomb), I suppose I could aim this thing directly at the sun without a solar filter! Last I checked, however, I didn't hate myself, so no worries, there! Big Grin
Seriuosly, I do appreciate the warning, thanks.
