I captured this image of comet c/2009 P1 (Garradd) on July 27,2011 with a Celestron C8 (F10) and a Canon digital Rebel (300d). I do enjoy comets and this was the first time I had the scope outside in months. I hope to get better images of the comet as it continues to brighten until sometime in 2012.

Hi Mike
I like your image and i think it is comet C/2009 P1 Garradd? I usually get some color on comets but not on this one. What are you using for a telescope and camera? I am guessing you are using a larger scope or autoguiding with longer exposures? I stacked 9 x 30s images in Deep Sky Stacker. If I take longer exposures light pollution is a problem.

I use a Celestron C8 and Canon 300D digital rebel.

James. You are correct, it is comet C/2009 P1. I used a TV127is 5" refractor and a ST10xmei ccd camer for this set of exposures. Guiding was done using a TV60is and an Orion starshoot autoguider, telling the Losmandy G11 where to go. The image is very noisy because the image only consist of 3x60 second exposures. One 60 sec each through a RG&B filter. Because of the speed the comet is moving you really can't take longer sets and the movement starts to show. My ability to minipulate the comet to stack many exposures with long exposures and still have pinpoint stars is something I have not got down good enough. This comet will be around for a while so I hope every one will keep it on the chip or eyepiece. Wink

Another image of comet Garradd taken Aug 25,2011. This one is 8 x30s subs stacked with Deep Sky Stacker. Telescope is a Celestron C8 @ F10 and
camera is Canon 300D (no guiding). There are lots of stars visible in this image because the comet was in front of a Milky Way arm.

Comet 2009 P1 Garradd / Feb 29, 2012

This is my latest image of Garradd. It was bigger and brighter in the eyepiece than it was in Sept 2011 but I was not able to
see the tail. I hope to give it another go soon.
