I've been asleep for too long, I guess. It just came to my attention that we'll be getting one of Earth's closest "bullet-burn" passages by an asteroid next week on February 15, 2013. At a mere 8%-9% of the average Earth-Moon distance, this asteroid will pass by us that afternoon as we are in daylight at just 21,000 miles distant. Estimated at approximately 150-feet in diameter, this space rock had the potential (for a SHORT time) to impact Earth on Feb 15 soon after it was first discovered last year at about this same time on the calendar, and if it didn't hit then, there was another possibility for a hit in 2020. Take a look for yourself at the article I read this Sat. evening on Earth Sky. Notice just how close this is in the excellent graphics at this site...

There is NO CHANCE of an impact now that the orbital calculations have been nailed down with relative certainty. The longer we study this close passage, the more accurate its orbit will be known. Thank your lucky stars for science!
