I am no expert on the subject but it appears there are two hot red pixels on the right side of the galaxy. This could be caused by the filters when taking RGB exposures. But like I said I could be wrong. Mike Question

Well I'm REALLY no expert, but would hot pixels have a sort of fuzzy "halo" around them? Could the signal "bleed" over into neighboring pixels?

But it seems to me that they wouldn't have released this image with an artifact like that in it. Those could easily be removed before release. Personally, I wonder if they might not be VERY distant redshifted galaxies?

They are curious, though.

Hello. As for what these places are I wiould say that they are galaxys. I am not sure which places were refered to in the first post for sure. I do still think that one in this crop image is suspect. It could be processing, color blead or maybe it is a much brighter galaxy just smaller. The link and arrow shows which I speak of. This only shows at full resolution so when the image loads right click the picture and refresh page ( full quality). Having said this I didn't look at any sky charts or any other sources to see if any objects were at the location. I have had hot pix, cosmic hits and flaws show a lot like this. Anyway in the end, I have no idea. Wink

Ah, HA! Now I see which two "red dots" you speak of! These are interesting in that they appear to be within the spiral arms of the galaxy, or maybe just happen to be seen through the spiral arms. The things you pointed out do appear to all be distant galaxies, just as the ones I first thought you meant that are further down-and-right of 1309. I didn't see these AT ALL in the picture on APOD.

These are curious as I first described the other two objects. If they are galaxies, I'd be impressed that the light from them could be finding its way through the spiral arms of 1309.

I'm giving up on any further guesses, however.
