Just thought I would bring it to the attention of all the members that there is an excellent planetarium and observing program out there you might want to give a try. The program name is "Stellarium".

Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.
Also, it's being used in planetarium projectors. Just set your coordinates and go.

The program will run on Windows, Mac OS/X, and Linux. If you want to take a look at it their website is at

http://www.stellarium.org/

Oh, did I forget to mention that it's FREE.

I have been using it for about a year and I really like it. It has a nice clean simple user interface that's easy to use.

Try it, you'll like it, especially the price.

Ed

Hey, Ed!

I thank you for turning me on to Stellarium several months ago. I needed the "user's guide" to get the most use out of it, but this is some very good planetarium software. The fact that its FREE is the biggest incentive towards recommending it to all our members and friends of AOAS.

The feature I most like about Stellarium is the background images of the creatures and figures associated with particular constellations. For instance, with this feature selected, the image of Orion the Hunter is superimposed over the stars we all know by sight. Same with Leo, and Ophiuchus, and Auriga, etc.

I share your enthusiasm for this software! Everyone should at the very least, try it and see how you like it........it won't cost you a cent to try!!!

Bob
